"WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?" LYRICS

The Next Good Rain

There's no way that I could know till I held mine up to yours,

just how badly damaged my own heart’s been.

How can I not wonder why I made it all this time

Not winding up with mine completely broken.

The Next Good Rain will wash away the tears I've cried

The Next Good Rain will heal the part of me that's died

Right now I'm all about feeling the pain

But it'll all wash away with the Next Good Rain

Everything we’ve done and said should lead us back to here,

But somehow we got lost beyond redemption

You swore on all that's right and true, you always would return,

But now that promise never does get mentioned.

The Next Good Rain will wash away the tears I've cried

The Next Good Rain will heal the part of me that's died

Right now I'm all about feeling the pain

But it'll all wash away with the Next Good Rain

MEDIA SWEETHEART

Your place is a mess, you’re only half dressed,

and they’ll be here in 15 minutes.

It took you years to perfect the face they expect,

but now you can’t seem to fit yourself in it.

You jumped in the game, you played it for fame,

never dreamed that you might be losing

They’ve got you trapped in a role that you just can’t control,

now your life’s gotten so confusing

Media Sweetheart, everybody wants a shot at you

Media Sweetheart, they’re all smiling but it’s not at you

They’re gonna shoot you down.

I know you’d cry if you only knew how

You could walk out right now

With your back to the wall you can’t possibly fall, at least

that’s what they always tell you

You can have all the friends and the Mercedes Benz

Just as long as they’re able to sell you

You life is a mess, you’re half undressed

How long will it take you to wake up?

They’ve taken your heart and torn you apart,

you can’t hide that behind your makeup.

LIFE OF ITS OWN

Seems our love has a life of its own

Young and beautiful, strong and steady

What we've got makes wanna race home

Push the whole world aside

Did WE land in some trouble-free zone?

Ripe with laughter, drenched in sunshine

How we worked to build it up on our own

We Took the long way around

These old bones don't feel like they should

But then you touch me, and it's all good

Life is short, let's live it all up

Let’s not be caught napping

In the TIME it takes to sing you this song,

All might disappear, all may vanish

We're not promised any more than we've got right now

ANDREA

Don’t like the way you wake me up,

And shake me out of bed

You never seem to get enough, you know,

You’ll never get ahead

Oh, Andrea, it’s your own fault you’re fallin’ down

Oh, Andrea, can I trust you one more day?

Or will you slip away?

My friends say you’re so untrue,

You’re just not for me.

I think I’m gonna move away,

THAT might make you see

The scene you made the other night, well,

You made history

Next time you bring the house down, baby,

Just don’t bring it down on me

Tee Many Martoonis

I met a guy at a local saloon, he had a pencil-thin mustache

and His sports coat was sorta maroon, or some kinda purple

(He said) “Sir, I see you throwin’ back that whiskey and beer,

I’d like to invite you to come over here, join my party,

it’s only a drink.”

Crowded ‘round his table was a bevy of beauties,

I thought to myself, “How can I refuse, he’s

A gentleman drinker, and quite well-connected.”

Then I took notice of a green-eyed lass,

Sippin’ something clear from a funny-shaped glass,

So I squeezed on in, and I ordered a round.

The next thing I knew, I came to oriented face-down.

Tee Many Martoonis,

I’ll take ‘em vodka or gin

Tee Many Martoonis,

I’m in trouble again

She grabbed me by the arm and whispered,

“come on, handsome,”

(Then we) wound up at something like the Playboy mansion.

I could get used to this life, if I only survive.

I found the liquor cabinet proudly displayed.

And just when I’m thinkin’ that I’ve got it made,

I saw Dewar’s and Bombay, Tanqueray

and all kinds of other foreign names

Not a bottle of Jack or Jim or Johnny to blame

Now, Pencil-thin asked me if I wanna stay on,

But I told him “no thanks, I’m headed on home.

I miss my beer, and my place at the bar

The ladies who surround you are a visual delight,

But I don’t believe I could last one more night

With so much distraction, and so little work.”

I hope that I didn’t come off to be some kind of jerk, but…

Tee Many Martoonis,

The room is starting to spin

Tee Many Martoonis,

I’m in trouble again

We Don’t Know Ourselves All Too Well

We burned so bright and hot,

Could’ve figured likely as not We’d fade away

But it didn’t have to end this way

Guess we thought we had it made,

But too much sun, not enough shade,

I think we never learned - That everybody just gets burned

I was surprised, you were unaware

You were so lonely, I was so unfair

There was no predicting how we fell

But I discovered, we don’t know ourselves all too well.

No love’s perfect, this we know

But you and me, we gave it a go, Then made a mess of it,

Made the two of us wanna quit

In the grander scheme of things,

So much baggage, so many things

Fell across our path - I Guess we just didn’t do the math

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

There's only two things I'm good at, That's right, only two;

Playing this guitar of mine, and loving only you

I complain about what I'm missing, and what's got in my way

It's time that I made up my mind, to just shut up and play

('cause you say) "What Are You Waiting For?

I've laid it all at your door,

Directions to take, decisions to make

And no commitments to break…

Out of all the years I’ve been given, this one means the most

I could just resign myself to sit it out and coast

But you’ve come alongside me, inspired me all the way,

I know I should make the most of every single day,

(you ask me) "What Are You Waiting For?

I've laid it all at your door,

Directions to take, decisions to make

And no commitments to break…

I will wait for you; will you wait for me?

My heart in your hands, taking a stand

Making no more demandS…

…than “What Are You Waiting For?”

YOUR HEART

I wanna talk about your heart

I wanna talk about the shape it’s in

Who’s been takin’ care of it?

Who’s been seein’ fit To keep it company?

I strutted in cocky, slunk away contrite

Tried to win you over, tried with all my might

But you weren’t buyin’ what I had to sell

When I think of what was wasted, I s’pose it’s just as well.

I wanna talk about your heart

I wanna talk about the shape it’s in

Who’s been takin’ care of it?

Who’s been seein’ fit To keep it company?

I wanna talk about our love

And understand how it all went wrong

I need to process every minute, Even those without you in it,

It was a mystery all along.

You told me that you loved me, showed me for a while

I saw it in your face, sensed it your smile

Then Things got crazy, somehow in your mind

When you look back on us, baby,

Will you call this just a waste of time?

YOU LIFTED ME

When I was wrong, wrong, wrong, you came along, long, long

And then You lifted, lifted, you lifted me.

My life was so, so bad, and I was oh so sad

But then You lifted, lifted, you lifted me.

You know I looked so long for you,

I didn’t know how I’d get through

But then I found you, and you lifted me.

It’s so good to hear you say, you’ll be beside me all the way

You made me something, something - you lifted me.

I’ll give my life to you, it’s just what I should do.

You made me something from nothing, you lifted me.

I was so out of line, about to lose my mind

And then you lifted, lifted, you lifted me.

You know I looked so long for you,

I didn’t know that I’d come through

But then I found you, and you lifted me.

It’s so good to hear you say, that you’re behind me all the way

You made me something from nothing - you lifted me.

FAIR IS FAIR

A wallet full of plastic dollars

Single again for a night or two

His faithful days have passed

And he knows her love is fadin’ fast

Fair is Fair – he’ll pretend that she just doesn’t care

Seems a shame cheatin’ on her this way again

Close enough to feel the fire turn to ice

If he could only stay in touch

With the way she feels, but a deal’s a deal

Fair is Fair – he’ll pretend that he just doesn’t care

Fair is Fair, if she can do it, so can he

Fair is Fair, she’ll never know what she can’t see

Fair is Fair, they don’t know where to place the blame

I guess that Fair is Fair, he’ll pretend that they just never cared

Same old kind of lonely

But she’s trying on a brand new lie

She’s not stayin’ home again,

While he’s on the road, she’s on the town

Fair is Fair, she’ll pretend that he just doesn’t care

Seems so strange, usin’ her mother’s name again

Takin’ her back to when this was all a game

Two wrongs don’t make it right

But it’s a long night, a long, long night,

Fair is Fair, she’ll pretend that she just doesn’t care

Fair is Fair, if he can do it, why can’t she?

Fair is Fair, he’ll never know what he can’t see

Fair is Fair, they don’t know where to place the blame

But I guess that Fair is Fair,

she’ll pretend that they just never cared

They'll pretend that they just never cared.

We’ll pretend that we just never cared.

SHORT STORY/HAPPY ENDINGS

I shouldn’t have to prove it to you,

there’s really not a thing I can do,

‘cause I believe in happy endings…

Let’s make a Short Story long,

Let’s take a song, and make it a symphony

Let’s take the long way around,

Show ‘em what we’ve found, love the way it ought to be,

Ought to be

You see I picked you right out of the crowd,

Everybody so loud, but you just smiled

I knew it wasn’t like it ever was like before

There was so much more, there in your eyes.

Everybody here looks like they’re having fun,

But I know what they’ve done to get that way

Grabbin’ hold of anything they could find,

Leavin’ love behind with nothing to say.
